What a Tribute

Although there were a couple of interesting things that transpired during the 2009 VMA's, my favorite part of the show was the opening number, Michael Jackson's tribute. The dancing was awesome, Janet Jackson was so incredibly strong and fierce for her brother, and the caliber of her "background dancers" were MAD RIDICULOUS! Regardless of what took place from that point forward, the show was already memorable for many...I know I'll never forget it.

I don't know about anybody else but I cried when the performance was done, even harder the second time I watched it.

Today I realized how much I despise the word "yall", well not necessarily the word but the idea. Don't get me wrong, I was born and raised in the South and I realize "yall" can be a term of endearment and to most (including me) the word just flows naturally but there is a certain context that the word can be used in that makes it quite offensive. I realized when in a conversation today the person said "Yall..." which lead me to the thought "Exactly who are you referring to when you say yall?" I'm an individual whose make-up includes many things "yall women", "yall black people", "yall bloggers", "yall that have graduated from Southern University", "yall two parent home products", "yall with the short hair", "yall that have on green nail polish"--make yourself clear! If you want to pass judgement on me as an individual feel free, if you've formed an opinion about me as an individual that's you're right but by all means don't hide behind "yall" when really you're only talking to ME.

In this ever evolving ride that is my life I find constant change. What I thought I really wanted never seems to be in the end what it looked like in the beggining (I guess i could have just said nothing's ever as it seems). Blogging and Blabbing--Sneak Peek

I figured I should say something since I've been missing in action for over a week now. I've been busy as can be working on my artwork to submit for school and it seems that things just get busier as the days go by. This is a synopsis of what's been going on with me...

Since I decided that I'd change my major to textile designs I thought it would be fitting to work on some patterns, this is one of the felt patterns I began.

I started construction of a needlepoint project from a self portrait that may be familiar to some of my long time readers...this is a sneak peek from weeks ago but it's almost complete now.

I experimented with oil paint for the first time but because I thought I could do things my way I didn't have linseed oil nor turpentine on hand so from now on I'll follow directions! I still like the outcome...the only thing I think I'll change is the brown in the picture (I don't fancy it too much).

I bought some fabric (100 % cotton), some dye (in primary colors), and I mixed them so that I could hand dye some fabrics at home then paint patterns on them later. It wasn't nearly as messy as I thought it be and I enjoyed doing it.

This is one of my favorite hand painted patterns I worked on, of course I've finished it now but since this is just a peek I posted the the incomplete picture.

I also have two other projects in the works and as soon as I get my camera fixed I'll take some better pictures of the completed projects above to share. (I have to use my blackberry camera so I apologize for the poor quality)

Objects of my Obsession...The Explanation

So over the past couple of years I've realized my personality can be quite addictive, I always have to have something to fixate upon and I like instant gratification (crazy right). I first noticed my obession when I finished 12 room concepts for my portfolio in a matter of 48 hours...I wasn't even sleepy I just wanted to work! Then there was the patio that roomie and I slaved in the 90 + degree weather to finish, next I went without a vehicle for months because I didn't just want "a car" I wanted a Toyota Solara (it's not a beamer but that's what I wanted at the time)...it was the object of my obsession. I decided one Saturday that I wanted a dog I obsessed over it for two days while I scoured the net looking for the perfect puppy and by that Tuesday Kori was a member of the family. One day while flat ironing my hair I realized that I would feel much more free if I got rid of that hair, I told my friends about it; they gave me their opinion and the next weekend I had a Mohawk. I now have my eye on design school and I've quit my job and I'm living home to get what I want...and oh yeah, Philly has become the newest object of my obsession!

Charley Harper and the Cardinal

I thought it was fitting that I post about red cardinals; for the past three weeks I've spotted the birds on my morning walk and with red being my favorite color I think they are some beautiful creatures. Famed illustrator Charles (Charley) Harper often made the feathered friends a subject of his artwork and you can even find home accessory collections featuring his illustrations of the birds. Plastic flatware???You've got to be kidding me! Designer Daisuke Hiraiwa painstakingly uses a soldering iron to poke holes into plastic spoons and knifes to create beautiful chandeliers full of movement and reflections of light.

The picture above is a close up of the flatware after Hiraiwa has carefully punched each hole, and the chandeliers below are the end result to his vision. His work was featured at this years ICFF and if you'd like to read more about Daisuka Hiraiwa you can go to his website.

Considering the nature of this post I thought it was only fitting that I also feature a design by Ali Siahvoshi which reuses flatware in a most attractive manner. Check out samples of his overhead dining light as well as a wall sconce created by Siahovoshi and manufactured through Fabbian.

Then it comes to me...like an Epiphany

WOW, that's all I can say. After at least 8 years of thinking I knew exactly what I wanted to do with myself I feel like I've had an epiphany about my life. Don't get me wrong I LOVE DESIGN but for quite some time I've wondered how my life would play out after I finished school it's like I get my design degree then what...? My roomie/friend would always say "Don't worry about it, you're talented and you'll succeed--it'll all work out" but I just wasn't for sure about that. However after throwing myself into a situation in which I'll have to sink or swim (and sinking is not an option) I've decided that I'm really going to give textile design a try! When I looked over all the things I love about art and design and all the posts I've done over the past two years (by the the way HUE turned 2 in March!) it really has always been about whatever is pretty and whatever makes me happy. Only time will tell and over the next three months my final decision will need to be made but for now I honestly feel at peace about my direction in design!

I've long been an Obama supporter, but now I have one other thing to add to the list of things I respect about our 44th president. On last night; May 12th, 2009 President and First Lady Barack Obama hosted the White House first ever "Poetry Jam". Musicians, poets, and artists gathered along with 200 invited guests into the East room of the White House to partake in an event that President Obama dubbed as "a chance to highlight the importance of the arts...the power of words and music." HBO will be airing the event, however the show times are not available at this time, I'll let you know when you should set your dvr's and tivo!

Who's hiding Miss Hue???

WOW...I've missed being able to blog! Although I'd pull disappearing acts from time to time it was always by choice but this time I was forced to disappear! I've been without my own personal computer for the past 3 months and because of that I hadn't been doing much of anything online. I still don't have my pc but I should be getting it back really soon...anyway there has been so many things that have transpired since I last blogged some things not so good but mostly I feel that happy times are ahead!

I'm sad to announce that famed artist Ernie Barnes (who I wrote my last blog about) has passed away he died at the age of 70 on Monday April 29, 2009. Mememorial donations may be sent to Hillsides Home for Children , 940 Avenue 64 Pasadena, CA 91105.

I'd also like to share some awesome news with all of my blog readers...I've finally given up my fulltime job in the accounting field and will be pursuing design with everything I have in me. If I have any readers out there from Philly I'd like to hear from you...as a matter of fact I'd like everyone to send me information about they're city as I search for a new "artsy" place to call home! Ain't we lucky we got em...Good Times

How many people remember the hit sitcom Good Times from the 1970's? It was about an African American family , The Evans Family, that lived in the Cabrini-Green housing projects in Chicago. I wasn't born when the series aired or went off the air but I've watched all the re-runs. Anyway the eldest son of the family, J.J.'s character, was a gifted painter on the show. I thought it would be interesting to share with you the real talent behind all of the beautiful artwork shown on the series...Mr. Ernie Barnes.

Ernie Barnes is a very influential African American painter and one of the most collected artists in the world. He has lead an interesting life, which he chronicles in his auto-biography From Pads to Palette. The book describes how a one time NFL player went on to sell out art galleries, have his work highlighted on national television and become commissioned as "The" artist for the 1984 Olympics. Do you ever go back; to another wall color, of course. I've gathered several images from the web, and the rooms below belong to some very bold individuals who decided to slip their decor into something more comfortable yet stylish and very out of the ordinary. It's been said that painting walls in a dark hue makes a room feel like a cocoon, enveloping you in comfort, I think black could be my comfort zone. I guess I can say I wouldn't be quick to go back to anything else.

Give your design a boost...with caffeine

Who knew all the great things you could do with leftover coffee and tea!? I was watching television the other day and I heard someone say a good way to stain light wood (such as pine) is with leftover black coffee! Not only is it a great way to re-purpose java but it's also all natural so that means it's great for the environment, I've heard it's best to use as stain when the coffee is a little cold. Of course that sent me on a search, so here are some other uses...

1. Use coffee or tea to dye and stain fabrics, shabby-chic design (as shown below) is a great example of a setting in which the method would work well with the color pallette.

2. Use coffee or tea to dye and stain paper or canvas to create art and accessories. I think it would be a great look if you were take varying sized strips of paper and dye them in different shades with coffe and tea, arrange them in a large white frame and hang it. I also thought the portrait below was interesting.

Get a flat screen television and show the guys that they're not the only ones who love tech toys, HGTV is a whole other experience when watched in high definition! You're screen may not be as big as theirs but then again who said size matters?! LOL

A girl has gotta have her favorite artwork. I personally prefer to custom paint all of the art in my home but I decided to share some work by one of my favorite artists, Rosemary Pierce-Lackey. I can watch art like I watch television, having a different emotion evoked each time I look at it, like seeing a picture for the first time every time.

Love the leather! Besides all single ladies owning a bad pair of leather boots, you have to have something leather for your home. I have a leather chair in my room that I kick back in, but you may choose leather pillows, curtains, or a sofa. Either way you'll add to your sexy swag with the look and feel and leather.

I don't know about you but after a long day I spell relief W I N E, and I don't want it out of a plastic cup. You've gotta have some nice stemware, and Go Bytch has a post telling you all about what wines accompany which glasses check her out to make sure you're being proper about it, I prefer which ever glass is the biggest but that's a personal thing LOL.

What girl doesn't love flowers? Even if you don't love flowers at least add plants or some type of life to your home ladies. I have orange daisies on my bedside table I LOVE THEM. Fresh flowers would be nice but when you can't keep that up go for the high end silk flowers and make it work, they'll add that final touch of femme.

One of my bff's not too long ago moved to a new place and bought new furniture so of course she had to have some original art work for her dining room wall. We decided to get together and have some dinner and do some painting...as WE painted (it was very much so a joint effort, by the end of the night I didn't have a brush in my hand) the picture sort of evolved into somewhat of a mixture of swirls...like a tornado or hurricane with the "eye of the storm" at the top of the portrait. We jokingly called it a hurricanes and even contemplated naming it such. How ironic is it that not even two weeks later Hurricane Gustav hit and devastated Louisiana, 95% of the city is without power and things are a mess. However, this was the end result and I love it...what do you think?

I also recreated a circle painting that I'd done for our recently decorated patio (which Gustav destroyed, but we're planning to rebuild) This is the painting below, scroll down for a photo of the patio in it's original state and you can see a larger version of this painting.

I've been dealing with the business of life, and since we now have a natural disaster in my city (Baton Rouge), I really have even more to deal with but all is well...and I'm BLESSED AND HIGHLY FAVORED! Way Cool Couch

This couch is really cool, the fabric is made to look like pixels, and it's full of color so you know I love it! It was designed by Christian Zuzunaga and you may have seen it on another site already but another look won't hurt.

Speaking of pixels, I pulled up behind this truck and thought it would make a great pop art photo.

I bought a frame that included a matte and held three photos so I decided to manipulate the picture in order to use it for all three frames; it didn't work out (the frame came with the photos that couldn't be removed) but I love the pictures and can't wait to actually use them. Check it out below.

I think we've got the swing of things

Finally, we've come to our last post in what's turned out to be a "series" on doors. We couldn't talk about doors and not look at the most common type...swing doors. Now there are two options when it comes to swing doors, those that just open and close, and those that actually swing back and forth. I don't know that I'd want a true back and forth swing door in my home but to each it's own. Check out my picks of open and close swing doors, once again these doors are courtesy of Albed and Bartels. These doors display varying styles ranging from frosted glass to colored glass, and from ebony stain to grass cloth.

I really like the design element above, they've faced the walls and doors with the same material so that it flows seamlessly, you'd barely know a door was there were it not for the handle.

I hope you've enjoyed checking out all the doors, they can really be a great way to update and change your space. Often times I talk about less expensive and more interchangeable ways that make a difference but a door is a commitment you'd have to make to your design style because they are too expensive to change out on a regular basis. However, the next time the opportunity knocks for you to make a change, answer it with a beautiful door that's just your style.

While I was looking at doors I figured we should keep the party going and check out some great sliding doors for the interior of your home. These aren't the sliding doors your use to, you know the ones that constantly get off track and you wind up just getting frustrated and leaning the door against the door frame rather than closing it properly! Some of these doors have exposed hardware mounted above them which plays to the industrial look, and those doors happen to be my favorite, but even with the hardware hidden these doors are WAY above average. Bartels Designer Doors and Albed are two options for sliding contemporary door companies but once again there are plenty of choices out there. When you're looking for a door keep in mind the space that the door is going to encompass...Will these be closet doors? or Will these doors open up to my bedroom or office? Contemporary means simple so don't get carried away with sliding doors everywhere you turn

Your front door is one of the first things people see when they come to your home and it should speak to your style. What does your current front door say about you and the style of your home? After lots of sweaty days, hard labor, and a sun that just wouldn't quit I am so excited to finally be able to show off the new patio roomie and I built! I don't have much time so this is only a preview but I just couldn't wait any longer to share with you the finished product. Needless to say there have been...and will be many Party's on the Patty!!!

This is the before and after, we took on several projects on the patio and I'll share them all with you during this week but so far...what do you think?

Modern Classic- The Cherner Chair

I've long admired this beautiful chair by Norman Cherner designed in 1958. I especially love that the chair reminds me of a woman's silhouette if she were to pose with her hands on her hips; with that said I didn't want to post this item until I was able to find the perfect picture(s) to go along with the classic piece of furniture. I thought I'd never conquer my quest (believe me sometimes it's an adventure to find the image) but low and behold I found an entire blog titled "Hands on Her Hips" , dedicated to none other than images of women with their hands on their hips! I think I've found the perfect pictures, art imitating life or life imitating art...either way I'm somewhat awe stricken.

I'd been searching for a solution...We're in the middle of redecorating the patio and I live in Louisiana so can we say HOT LIKE FIRE!!! The temp today was 100 with the head index so needless to say we'll need some shade for that patio. Since I'm not one for things that are very conventional I began a quest to find a contemporary solution for overhead shading. I found it! It's in the form of these triangular and 4-sided polygon shaped canopies. In the right color, and especially with the layered affect these canopies were EXACTLY what I was looking for...I'm glad to say THINGS ARE LOOKING UP!

They're available at several retailers including Target and Walmart but they offer limited sizes and colors. To get a customized shade or a larger color variety you'll need to go to more of a specialized retailer click here for some choices. I think I'm in love...but what's new!

HEEEEEYYYYYYY!!!! I'm so excited you've been staying tuned in, you know every now and again I go M.I.A! I wish I could say I've been vacationing somewhere exotic but...I've just been really busy lately, it's hard to have your personal and professional life coexist sometimes, so I hope you'll forgive me...now let's get on to the business.

A couple of weeks ago my roomie called to let me know that our beloved tree that added so much character to our patio and been cut down (the branches were damaging the roof). Since that's happened our outdoor space looks to empty, the furniture that we had initially put out there has been damaged by the elements and it's time for a makeover! We have HUGE plans for the patio and are hoping to finish before June, I can't wait to share it with you. In the meantime and in between time, check out this awesome patio furniture at Tropitone!

While browsing online one night I came across this fabulous site, full of hand painted pop art and infused with culture and color! Needless to say I was blown away and I found myself moving from one painting to the next always assuring myself with each click that I would surely find my favorite...but of course they all ended up being my favorite!

This excellent work I speak of is by none other than artist Howie Green. His artwork has been noted as "An eye candy pop art wonderland, with an accent on fun", and I couldn't think of a better way to describe it. His imagination combined with his perception of art in everyday life, and the strokes of his paintbrush has earned him over 40 awards. Howie has had a long prosperous career creating murals from colleges to restaurants, libraries to museums, all the while he has continued to be fresh and innovative. I urge everyone to check his website and fall in love the way I have.

I had to choose some of his work to highlight so I chose to fuse my love of music with my love of art (not much of a stretch lately) below are some classic album covers that Green has converted into pop art.

Words can't even express how great a time I had in New Orleans! I'm a simple girl (at least I like to think) so there are certain things that really excite me that others might think of as boring or corny...but whatever, because I enjoy doing me. I found the trip to be rich with history and there was culture around every corner. Just bear with me if it this doesn't sound like a blast to you...lol

In my two days in New Orleans I visited the art galleries and antique shops in the French Quarter and on Julia St in the Warehouse District. I had some awesome cajun cuisine from several restaurants including one across from the historic Jackson Square, rode a ferry down the muddy Mississippi River, ate beignets at none other than Cafe Du Monde, took a horse a carriage ride through the French Quarter, chilled out at some sidewalk cafes and bars, listened to Tom Sacton and his jazz band in the courtyard of The Historic New Orleans Collection , toured Ogden's Museum of Southern art, the Contemporary Arts Center, and St. Louis Cathedral. I'm tired just thinking about it! There was way too much to include it all here so I'll do highlights here and there in the future to discuss in detail all of the art and architecture I encountered. Check out the flicks of some of the sights I saw as we walked and rode along.

I love color (how many times can I say that), so I couldn't pass by these porcelain pears and not take a picture. Cherry blossoms are also a favorite of mine, and that wall sculpture is quite beautiful so I snapped a picture as we walked along Julia St.

Henrique Oliveira was commissioned by the Contemporary Arts Center to construct a cloud made of discarded bedding material found in the streets of New Orleans...pictured above is the result that now hangs in the entrance of the museum.
Shown above are just more random pictures that I wanted to share. I'm sure many of you are familiar with or have seen some of the "Blue Dog" paintings by George Rodrigue, he has four studios throughout the United States, one of which is in New Orleans.

Although the photo is not detailed, and rather dark I had to get a picture of the ceiling of the St.Louis Cathedral.
I truly enjoyed the jazz in the courtyard (don't tell anybody I was dancing in my chair), and it wasn't because of the free Stiletto Vodka martini's...the band was really great!

I've lived in Baton Rouge (about 45 minutes away from New Orleans) all my life, and I've been to New Orleans way too many times to even attempt to count, but I'd never seen the city like this. I've said before to be a tourist in your own city...I have a whole new appreciation for that place, so wherever you're at get out and see what there is to see!

ASID is holding their annual conference ,Interiors 08, in New Orleans, LA; and it's happening right now! I'm in New Orleans and although I didn't attend any classes or sessions today...I've had THE BEST DAY EVER!!! I'll post pictures from today and tomorrow on Sunday so check back.

"You, you you, you you"...mayne I love this song, but I digress.

Raheem Devaughn is back...for the first time. I say that because this single is actually off his debut album, where as the chair I posted a few weeks back was on the cover of his sophomore album. Although this vid came first, I hadn't seen it in awhile and when I caught it the other night I had to share.

Check these still shots from his single "You" that features the classic Le Corbusier chaise lounge designed in 1928.

Classic and contemporary...I LOVE IT! Now of course this chair doesn't come cheap, if you want an original, signed, and numbered chaise produced by Cassina it'll cost you $2,660.00 (pictured below, top). Now if you don't see spending that type of money in your near future you may have to settle for the version that's $699.00 (pictured below, bottom).

I must admit I prefer the more expensive version, but that's just me. What do you think?

I often don't include my opinion on this site because it's really about design and I don't want to make anyone uncomfortable, but I can't help myself....O B A M A, I'm team Obama all the way!

Now that I have that out of my system, on to design. If you watched the debate tonight you may have noticed the chairs that both the members of the panel and candidates sat in...stylish don't you think?

I thought so.....so much that I grabbed my camera and took a picture while I was watching!

These chairs are courtesy of one of the most prolific modern design teams, yielding classic contemporary pieces I constantly reference...Charles and Ray Eames. The chair was designed in 1958 as part of the eames aluminum group and is called the "management chair".

Now if you want an original eames chair it will cost you $1,129.00, but the shipping may be free!

I don't know how on earth I could have forgotten; there is one place that we need to acknowledge, that has been with us along all of our travels through Africa, and that place is Tribal Textiles in Zambia, Africa.

Bidding Africa Farewell

We've reached our last stop on our tour through Africa, and we've found ourselves in Ghana and Cote d'Ivorie (The Ivory Coast). The reason I stopped here was because I found the pattern in this space reminded me a lot of Adrinka symbols which are used by the Akan people of this region. It also reminded me of the terra-cotta clay statues and once again the red sunsets.

I've enjoyed our journey through Africa, I'm sure we'll revisit one day, it's a continent rich in culture but for now we'll bid it adieu.

Next stop...you gotta stay tuned to find out, but I will stay were heading East.

Sands and Water from East to West

The Sahara desert cover the entire gray area shown to the left...it's almost as big as the United States and bigger than Australia. I've chosen this region to inspire the next color scheme of blue and tan.

From the M'Hamid dunes in Morroco (furthest Northeastern country in Africa) to the only standing ancient "Seven Wonder of the World" the Pyramid of Giza in Egypt (furthest Northwestern country in Africa); the Sahara desert and it's surroundings make for some breathtaking scenes. In some places you can't even tell where the seas stop and the sky begins! While in other places there is desert as far as the eye can see. Watch the sunset over the Sahara and be inspired!

Let's take a dive

Don't pack you're things quite yet...were not done. We just left South Africa ,looking for our African daises, but now were diving off the coast of Mozambique which is between South Africa and Tanzania, where we toured the Serengeti.

Here we'll visit the Two Mile Reef at Benguerra, where we can dive and spot some pink coral for inspiration. Not into diving...that's okay, because you don't even have to leave South Africa to view the beautiful coral sky as the sun sets over The Greater St.Lucia Wetland Park, which was declared a World Heritage site in 1999. The park is in Zululand, South Africa which has been made famous by one of the most popular kings, Chaka Zulu, who created the Zulu nation.

I found these scenes and colors to be one of the most relaxing, and it's definitely shown through the decor it inspires.

The soft side of Africa

When I think of pinks and corals I think about the soft side of things...I've said long before I'm not a pink kinda girl but I find myself falling deeper and deeper in love with the color. While were in the area of Kenya we may not want to bring the wild safari into our space but we can be just as inspired by the soft side of Africa.

Let's travel deeper south to central Kenya and Lake Nakuru where the greatest bird spectacle on earth occurs as millions of flamingos descend upon the lake's shores. Borrow from the scheme of the pink birds, the blue waters and the tan shores that are seen as you look upon this amazing sight...can you even imagine millions of flamingos, so many that you can't even recognize the surface of the shallow lake due the mass of pink!

The colors of the textiles shown also reminds me of the African Daisy(shown below in pink and orange), you'll have to travel even lower to South Africa to pick these beauties but they are some gorgeous flowers; don't you agree?

I'm loving the softer, and quite vibrant side of Africa!
