Fruit isn't just for eats...

Why not try to decorate with it? For the longest time you've seen the "fruit" themed kitchen, you know, the table is adorned with a basket filled with plastic apples, oranges, bananas, grapes, etc; Meanwhile you have seat cushions, curtains, table clothes, and place mats filled with this fruit pattern...THAT'S NOT WHAT I'M SUGGESTING.
Try adding food to your decor in a more modern fashion, like the picture above (courtesy of crate and barrel). Use bright red apples on a highly polished chrome tray, or fill a large glass vase with fresh ripe limes. Here are some tips on using fruit in a more contemporary setting:
  1. Stick with one type of fruit. Mixing them takes away from the simplicity, which is a key element of contemporary design.
  2. Use fresh fruit. Just as changing silk flowers to fresh flowers can make a big difference, the same applies in this situation.
  3. Choose brightly colored fruit. Citrus fruit and apples are most commonly used because bold color is another sign of contemporary spaces.

These are some sample pictures...the fruit jumps off the page for me, and I'm sure it would do the same in the correct design setting.

Also, if you're worried about wasting fresh fruit DON'T, once the fruit begin to discolor you can use it to mix and make your own potpourri!
